Event: Treasures from the Vault open house

Join us in the Bentley Rare Book Gallery on Thursday, October 25, 2012, from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm for our open house event, “Treasures from the Vault.” Staff will bring out rarely-viewed items from the collection and will discuss their significance to the history of the written and printed word in English.

The event is free and open to the general public.

Rita Impey-Imes Rare Book Conservation Fund

Rita Impey-Imes Rare Book Conservation FundThe Archives, Bentley Rare Book Gallery, and Records Management are pleased to announce the creation of the Rita Impey-Imes Rare Book Conservation Fund. If you’ve had a class or tour with Rita, you know her passion for the Bentley Rare Book Gallery and her commitment to hands-on education using special collections. The goal of this fund is to recognize Rita’s contributions to the Gallery and to ensure continued access to its treasures.

Funds will be used for the conservation of books, prints, manuscripts and leaves in the Bentley Rare Book Gallery at Kennesaw State University, allowing them to be seen, held, studied and treasured by generations to come.

For more information about the fund, please contact Dr. Tamara Livingston at tlivings (at) kennesaw (dot) edu or (770) 423-6989. Donations may be made by check and credit card. Checks should be made out to the “KSU Foundation.”

The Making of the King James Bible: A Musical Tribute

How God Became English: The Making of the King James BiblePlease join us for a musical tribute performed by the Kazanetti String Quartet, an award-winning group based in Atlanta, Georgia. The performance will include remarks from the curatorial team and will be followed by light refreshments.

“A Musical Tribute” marks the closing of the year-long exhibit, “How God Became English: The Making of the King James Bible,” a collaborative project hosted by the Kennesaw State University Archives and the Bentley Rare Book Gallery.

It will take place on Tuesday, October 23, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the Athenaeum Gallery, which is located on the 2nd floor of the Horace W. Sturgis Library. The event is free and open to the public.

GABA's 20th Annual Georgia Fine and Collectible Book Fair

Rare Book iconJoin the Bentley Rare Book Gallery’s Senior Curator, Robert Williams, and Director of Archives, Rare Books & Records Management, Dr. Tamara Livingston, for two one-hour presentations on “Book collecting for everyone” on Saturday, September 22, at 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm.

The presentations are part of the Georgia Antiquarian Booksellers Association (GABA) 20th Annual Georgia Fine Arts and Collectible Book Fair, which will be held in the Cobb County Civic Center on Saturday, September 22, 2012, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday, September 23, 2012, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. The fair will feature over 30,000 books and ephemera for sale, as well as free professional appraisal for up to 5 books.

Admission is $5.00 per person and free for children under 12. The Archives has a limited number of free passes for the fair. You may come by the Archives to pick up a pass, limit one per person.

The American Jesus: A Lecture by Dr. David Parker

Join Dr. David Parker, Professor of History at Kennesaw State University, for “American Jesus,” a discussion on ways in which Jesus has been portrayed throughout American history in the arts and literature. The event takes place on Thursday, February 16, at 7:00 pm in the Athenaeum Gallery, Horace W. Sturgis Library, 2nd floor. It is free and open to the public.

Dr. Parker’s lecture kicks off the spring programming for the exhibit, How God Became English: The Making of the King James Bible.  Join us for a fascinating presentation in the exhbiit space and take time to view original manuscripts and Bible leaves from the Bentley Rare Book Gallery.

Treasures from the Vault: Bentley Rare Book Gallery Open House

Experience Kennesaw State University’s collection first-hand during the Bentley Rare Book Gallery’s open house on Thursday, December 1, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Staff will display rarely-seen treasures from the vault.

The event is free and open to the public. The Bentley Rare Book Gallery is located on the lower level of the Horace W. Sturgis Library on the campus of Kennesaw State University. Parking is available in the Visitor’s Parking Lot.
